Cut the bread into 1-2 inch squares and add them to a large bowl.
In another bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until combined.
Pour over the bread, stir gently until covered, and set aside for 20 minutes.
Spread in a baking dish and bake in the oven for about 50-60 minutes, until the center is set.
To prepare the sauce in a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cream until combined.
Add the butter and heat over medium heat until the butter melts and the liquid begins to boil.
Whisk the mixture until it thickens a little, then remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
Note: Half the quantity can be prepared for a smaller number of people by placing half the quantity of all the ingredients and using 3 small eggs.
